John Spilsbury is an Industrial Era Great Merchant in Civilization VI.
Unique ability[]
Grants 1 Toys, a uniquely manufactured Luxury resource which provides +4 Amenities.
Strategy[]
Similar to other Great Merchants that grant unique luxuries, John Spilsbury's ability can give cities a needed boost to their yields in the late game. However, a bonus luxury resource, while nice, is not usually worth spending Gold or Faith on recruiting. The exceptions are when playing as Scotland, which can turn Amenities into Production and Gold; and as Montezuma, who can turn luxuries into Combat Strength. Spilsbury is a gamechanger for both Scotland and Montezuma, and should be a high priority for both of them. To a lesser degree, he is also desirable for Lady Six Sky, who's encouraged to build a small number of massive cities that are often starved for luxuries.
Civilopedia entry[]
The apprentice of the Royal Geographer to King George III, John Spilsbury’s unique geography teaching aid would become his best known invention. Transferring a map of the world onto wood and carving out each country, students of geography learned the subject by assembling the first jigsaw puzzle.
He made his first puzzle in 1767 and went on to turn the world, continents, and countries into puzzles. The business this invention spawned was passed on to his wife after his death.
