Civilopedia entry[]
Heavy industries – jukogyo in Japanese – create precisely what the name implies: large-scale machinery, tools, buildings, and equipment. Heavy industries were favored by Meiji and later Japanese regimes, and companies such as Mitsubishi and Fuji began as such. Mitsubishi, founded in the 1850s at the behest of the shogunate, is a case in point: Dutch engineers built the first major foundry in Japan, which expanded to include shipbuilding and steel working. These proved to be important imperial assets when Japan went to war and required weapons and vehicles, so Mitsubishi factories were a prime target for the atomic bomb attack on Nagasaki.
