Civilopedia entry[]

While the uwaybil k’uh was the inner resting place of the gods, a deity’s entire house was called the k’uh nah. This interior space was devoted solely to the god's interactions with the community, and many social functions could occur here. But even the temple complex was part of a larger ceremonial complex, where the dwelling and activity places of particular gods were mapped onto physical terrain, presided over by a literate priestly class.

Much has been made of sacrifice in Maya religious practice, but the k’uh nah extends beyond the ritualized human sacrifice that many imagine. On an everyday level, the sprinkling of blood, most often from animals, was a key part of rituals aimed at currying favor with the gods. This spilled red blood recalls the red of Maya structures – blood’s brightness, its vitality, its essence, were the currency to be traded to the gods.
