Civilopedia entry[]
A kahuna, loosely translated as “one who takes care of things,” is a Hawaiian expert on a topic of choice. A kahuna’s training is primarily theological; from there, kahunas often specialize in various sciences, particularly medicine, as well as spiritual and magical practices. However, their expertise can vary widely and include anything from canoe carving to agricultural techniques. Both men and women can become kahunas, provided they study for many years and are recognized for their expertise by either a teacher or the community at large.
