Civilopedia entry[]
By some definitions, the Chola navy was a vast enterprise, arranging conquests from Sri Lanka to Cambodia, extending trade routes from Africa to China, and amassing power over the Indian Ocean. However, by other definitions, the Chola navy did not even exist. Instead of a standing navy, in times of war, the Chola would contract a large number of merchant vessels and privateers (possibly pirates). The design of these ships and how they functioned is largely lost to history, and surviving records are riddled with inaccuracies.
Here “kalam” refers to “vessel” in Tamil. It is not a terribly descriptive name, nor is it evocative, but it remains the most accurate term to describe a unit of the immense and diverse navy of the Cholas.
Trivia[]
- The Kalam's in-game model is based on a painting in the Ajanta Caves.
