Civilopedia entry[]
Southern India – the home of the Tamil and their Chola dynasty – sits at the heart of the Indian Ocean. From here, powerful merchant houses managed trade between the Abbasid Empire, Aksum, and Tang China, and outward from the Indian subcontinent. This was a powerful position, and the flood of kanakam (Chinese gold) into Chola trading hubs enriched their coffers. On these trade routes, Chola language (especially script), religion, and culture traveled widely – a conquest that was much more successful than Chola military expeditions. A series of wars with the Khmer and others proved inconclusive, but by the end of the Chola period, Sanskrit poetry was being read across the Indian Ocean.
