How do you use Kaolin? |
Civilopedia entry[]
Kaolin refers to fine white clay, used today in a variety of ways: as a glaze on paper, as a whitener in cosmetics, or in paint. The word is unfamiliar to many, but its primary historical form is not: porcelain, a hard, at times translucent, pottery, fired at extremely high temperatures. Porcelain was one of the earliest trade products from Asia (especially China) to Europe, and its lightness, hardness, delicacy, and color was a marker of prestige and refinement for those who could afford it. Attempts to replicate Chinese (and later Korean and Japanese) porcelain involved a fair degree of espionage and stealth until, in 1710, production began in what is now Germany.
