Civilopedia entry[]
Leadership in the Mongolian Empire was a complex system revolving around clan loyalties and the charisma of the khan. Assassinations were a persistent risk. Due to the temporary structure of the Mongolian ger (tent), trusted guards (the keshig or keshik) were vital to leaders. These guards would have been chosen from the best and most deserving Mongolian warriors. Indeed, the name “keshig” means “blessed.” For their service, keshig were often granted membership into their ruler’s clan.
The tradition of keshig continued in many places the Mongols influenced, including Mughal India, where the term came to mean the arms of the palace guard; Yuan China; and the various khanates that sprang up in the wake of Genghis Khan’s death.
