Civilopedia entry[]
Royal inscriptions of ancient Mesopotamian rulers typically begin with a list of titles, and among the Neo-Assyrian kings, one of the most potent is “king of the four quarters.” The four quarters, “kibrāt arba’i,” refer to ancient geographical locations that align with the cardinal directions (Sumer, Martu, Elam, and Subartu), but the implication is “the whole world.” It is not used by every king – its presence declines with the absence of military campaigns, so certain military accomplishments may have been required to claim it. Its potency outlived the Assyrians themselves; the final ruler to use the title was Cyrus the Great.
