There is no image more emblematic of the Middle Ages than the knight: a heavily armored warrior astride a warhorse who bears a noble title and upholds a code of chivalric conduct. These figures were made famous through medieval romances such as the Arthurian tales, and formed countless societies, such as the Knights of Malta, the Order of the Dragon, and the Order of the Garter. But what truly defines a knight? Here, we focus on the combination of arms, armor, and horse, which can range from the classic European knight to the Iranian aswaran, or the more lightly-armored Korean hwarang and the Japanese samurai. Regardless of culture, knights were the tanks of their day, capable of dealing and withstanding immense amounts of damage.
