Civilopedia entry[]
A laboratory is a place of experimental learning. While the word is often interchangeable with “institute,” the latter implies more engagement with texts, whereas laboratories involve practical matters: beakers of bubbling chemicals, grinding gears, animal/human specimens, etc. Historical laboratories could include the studios of Leonardo da Vinci and the Divine Machine Division (shenjiying) of the Ming Dynasty, a place that experimented with new forms of firearms and weaponry. A laboratory could be a result of state-funded experimentation, a part of a university, or a private workshop run by an individual or company. These spaces typically hosted the work of a group of scientists and assistants, often with a particular goal. The DuPont labs, for instance, began in the early 1800s as a gunpowder supplier and moved on to materials science (including medicines) to further profits.
