For many, space exploration carries a dream of unity. Together against the vacuum of inhospitable space, many imagine the fading of humanity's national rivalries. With that in mind, it is a pity that rocketry developed as a weapon of war. Facing the increasingly devastating aerial bombing of German cities, the Third Reich created the V2 rocket, a supersonic artillery capable of raining destruction on London and other targets from launchpads located in safe zones. Such a rocket first crossed the line into space in 1944. Since then, the utopian appeal of exploration and its darker side have been in constant tension. The Soviet Union launched the first satellite (Sputnik, in 1957) and the first human (Yuri Gagarin, in 1961) to Russian pride and Western dread. The technology that could carry an explorer could also carry a nuclear warhead.

Since those early days, many countries have built space programs, both as a means to develop sophisticated weapons that may spell humanity’s decline and for the exploration that may prove its salvation.
