Civilopedia entry[]
The legatus was a senior commander in the Roman army. His primary duty was leading his legion; if he controlled a province, he also acted as the local governor. Before becoming a legatus, one had to have served as a tribune before being appointed by the emperor himself. A legatus was recognizable by his scarlet cape and was responsible for commanding his units, training soldiers, administering discipline, and securing supplies, though he had a staff of six to whom these tasks were typically delegated.
