Levi Strauss is an Atomic Era Great Merchant in Civilization VI.

Unique ability[]

Grants 2 Jeans Jeans, a uniquely manufactured Luxury resource which provides +4 Amenities Amenities.

Strategy[]

Similar to other Great Merchants that grant unique luxuries, Levi Strauss' ability can give cities a needed boost to their yields in the late game, as well as provide mass amounts of Gold Gold from trading with the AI in single player. However, a bonus luxury resource, while nice, is not usually worth spending Gold Gold or Faith Faith on recruiting. The exceptions are when playing as Scotland, which can turn Amenities Amenities into Production Production and Gold Gold; and as Montezuma, who can turn luxuries into Strength Combat Strength. Strauss is a gamechanger for both Scotland and Montezuma, and should be a high priority for both of them. To a lesser degree, he is also desirable for Lady Six Sky, who's encouraged to build a small number of massive cities that are often starved for luxuries.

Note that unlike John Spilsbury, who grants only one copy of his luxury, Strauss grants two.

Civilopedia entry[]

The San Francisco gold rush brought hundreds of thousands of fortune seekers to California. Levi Strauss moved there and found a fortune, but not in the hills.

Born in 1829 in Germany, Levi Strauss moved to the United States with his family when he was 18. His family opened a business that sold clothes, blankets, and other dry goods. He moved to San Francisco to capitalize upon the gold rush, opening west coast branch of Levi Strauss & Co. One of his customers, a tailor named Jacob Davis, innovated on the design of denim pants by adding metal rivets to the seams to prevent ripping. Davis joined Strauss and opened factories to produce the jeans. More expensive than their competition because they did not exploit immigrants, Levi Strauss & Company guaranteed their pants would not rip and replaced any that did.

Levi Strauss died in 1902. Ten years after his death, his company would begin selling products internationally. Seventy years later, sales reached $1 billion.
