If zhi refers to the correct knowledge of things, li refers to the correct orientation towards them. Translated as “rites,” li refers not only to ritual but to the proper conduct between the things of the world. Accordingly, one should laugh at the right things, perform the proper mourning ceremonies, eat and drink in the right way, and so on.

Therefore, li is more than a series of customs; it is a way of life, a proper life, oriented towards things as they should be.
