Civilopedia entry[]

Liberalism is an often-misused word. In brief, liberalism refers to the rights of an individual as enshrined in the social contract, especially when such rights might conflict with the norms of the majority. Economic liberalism indicates the rights of individuals to operate economically as they see fit through an absence or minimum of regulation or taxation, whereas social liberalism seeks to protect the rights of the individual in terms of language, identity, or expression. Historically, the principles of liberalism, especially as articulated by philosophers such as John Locke or Thomas Hobbes, were foundational to the French and American Revolutions, as evinced by the former’s Declaration of the Rights of Man and the latter’s Bill of Rights. While often associated with “left” politics due to its social aspects, liberal philosophy leans more towards capitalism on the economic spectrum.
