Civilopedia entry[]

Most understand the concept of a library – it is a collection of books. But what books? For what purpose? Who curated this collection? Who can access them? Our concept of a public library that is available to all is a modern invention. Early libraries were primarily for kings, nobles, priests, and other specialists.

In antiquity, the library of Ashurbanipal of Assyria stands out. This was a collection of tens of thousands of clay tablets, wax cylinders, papyrus scrolls, and other items collected by trade or conquest, and the space contained everything from texts on divination to religious epics (including the Epic of Gilgamesh) to legal records. These were not simply read for entertainment but for knowledge about how the world, its people, and its gods all worked.

The names of other famous libraries echo through the centuries: Alexandria (in Egypt), Nalanda (in India), the Wen Yuan Pavilion (in China), the House of Wisdom (in the Abbasid Caliphate), the library at Timbuktu (in Mali), and others. These structures rose and fell along with writing and knowledge – as empires fall, libraries burn.
