Civilopedia entry[]

To characterize Egyptian religion is to gloss over thousands of years of cultural change and development. Ra, the sun-god, is sometimes fused with other deities, such as Horus, the falcon-headed god of kingship, or Amun, the creator deity. In his most popular depictions, Ra emerges as an august lord, the carrier of the sun on its daily travel. Transcending the conflict between Horus and Set, Ra shepherds the solar disk as it crosses the sky before embarking on a dangerous voyage at night, as the sun-ship sails through the underworld and is attacked by Apep, the giant snake. Ra is often defended by Set – a god usually associated with evil and the desert who is a much more complicated figure in Egyptian mythology. According to priests’ guides, Apep is defeated when he is spit on, then kicked, then smitten with a lance, then bound, then cut with a knife, then set on fire (those who think this is extreme should note that Apep is quite long).

Still, the light of Amun-Ra returns each morning, proving the victory of the sun over darkness. At least for one more day.
