Strategy
Edit
The Lighthouse is the first specialized sea building, considerably improving the Food production of coastal cities. Oftentimes those cities have problems growing because of limited access to food (usually when they're built on islands). Construct a Lighthouse in them ASAP, especially if there are Fish resources nearby. The effect of a Lighthouse on improved Fish resources turns them into veritable "food pumps" very early in the game.
Note that the Great Lighthouse wonder provides a free Lighthouse building. If you plan on constructing this wonder in one of your cities, don't bother building a Lighthouse there!
Civilopedia entry
Edit
Since man has taken to the sea in ships, he has built beacons on the shore to guide returning vessels back to harbor and to warn their captains of perilous shoals and rocks. The earliest known lighthouse was the Pharos (Great Lighthouse) of Alexandria. Constructed on the small island of Pharos just off of the coast of Alexandria, it survived for over a thousand years, guiding countless thousands of vessels to Alexandria's safe harbor.
