Civilopedia entry[]
Before the 1800s, the world was only lit by fire. Torches, rushlights, gaslights, and kerosene lanterns were how people made their way through homes, cities, and the roads between. Those used to streetlights on the road, headlights on cars, and the ambient glow of cities reflected off the clouds will struggle to imagine sailing through a sea on a moonless night, the sky lit solely by stars and the occasional flash of sea phosphorescence. Knowing one's location, especially at night, was a matter of literal life or death for sailors, so lighthouses lit by massive bonfires were one way early societies marked dangerous (or popular) places. While Alexandria likely has the most famous lighthouse of the ancient world, the Romans built beacons across Europe at places such as the Tower of Hercules in Spain, and other societies lit beacons on the shores. Surprisingly, ancient China had a limited lighthouse tradition, using pagodas on the shore to navigate (and forgoing sailing on moonless nights).
