On the beds of prehistoric seas, the calcium carbonate shells of mollusks and corals fell, were ground to powder, and compressed over millions of years. This process forms limestone, a sedimentary rock that has been important for construction since antiquity. Because of the ease in which limestone can be cut, and its impressive white luster, limestone was used in construction of ancient buildings such as the Great Pyramid of Egypt, or when burned and made into plaster, the wonders of the Maya world. Subjected to intense heat and pressure, limestone will eventually produce yet another important and wonderous stone – marble.
