Civilopedia entry[]
Arranging troops in lines makes sense in a battlefield simulation. Each soldier faces forward, and with the pull of a trigger, a deadly volley flies toward their enemies. This is how line infantry was utilized during the 18th and 19th centuries. For instance, the Napoleonic Wars call to mind pictures of regimented lines, resplendent in their elaborate uniforms, marching in order across an open battlefield. The line infantry era is known for its cult of military discipline – of rulers' pleasure in ordered parades and demonstrations that mixed discipline with pomp. However, a line only remained orderly for a moment, before the crack of fire erased the sound of a commander’s voice, the haze of gun smoke obscured each soldier's vision, or the cavalry charge bit into a line’s flank. Line tactics were only effective for the opening salvos, after which the battle devolved into the sorts of independent fighting that war had always known. Still, a good unit’s first volley could sometimes win the day.
