Civilopedia entry[]
Writing was invented independently at least five times in human history: in Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, the Indus River valley, and in Mesoamerica. But to what extent was the average person literate? Certainly, Roman citizens and (many) slaves had to navigate a world of registers, ledgers, and books, implying some level of literacy. Buddhist temples even made a core point of teaching literacy to young novices. Over time, especially in Buddhist and Muslim civilizations, literacy became a marker of a pious, full person – how can one understand the mind of God or the workings of the dharma if one cannot read the sacred text? In some places – medieval Europe or Mesoamerica – access to the written word was the purview of kings and priests, as serfs and subjects were not expected to have need of written words. In such societies, writing contained mystical importance, and access to it by those outside of spheres of power could prove dangerous.
