The New World differed perhaps the most from the Old in having few beasts of burden – there were no horses, camels or elephants to carry loads from one city to the next. But in the Andes, there were llamas, and they were well-suited to traversing the high paths. Long before the Inca Empire rose, Andean peoples used llamas (and their cousins, the alpacas) for wool, fertilizer, meat, and, of course, transportation. These appear to have been extremely important for the consolidation and growth of empire in the region but also limiting – where llamas did not do well (in the jungle lowlands, for instance), empire also did not expand.
