Civilopedia entry[]
Hawaiian rulers faced the same challenge as the Inca: how to turn mountainous terrain into a productive powerhouse? Like the Inca, they arrived upon a common solution: terraced farms. In the Hawaiian case, the staple crop, taro, required artificial wetlands to thrive, and lo’i kalo provided that space. The streams that feed lo’i kalo (literally “taro patch”) begin at artificial stone dams where cool water flows. This water is redirected to channels that feed the patches, and requires constant maintenance to ensure it flows fresh and cool. The establishment of these plots supplied one of the two major historical empires (along with the Inca) whose staple crops were not grains or cereals, but tubers.
