Civilopedia entry[]
The underworld, the “place of fear,” was where the most fearsome Maya gods lived, gods with names such as “Flying Scab” and “Jaundice Demon.” This was the roosting place of the bat-god Camazotz, the massive beast that decapitated its victims and drank their blood. According to Maya myth, these gods commanded the worship of humans in ancient times, demanding increasingly brutal sacrifices until the Hero Twins descended into the underworld to avenge the death of their father, Hun Hunahpu. The twins were forced into a series of deadly challenges and ball games, which they won, until one of them lost his head to a bat. Thanks to their power of resurrection, the Hero Twins managed to eventually triumph, and the lords of Xibalba receded into darkness.
