Civilopedia entry[]
A near-vertical plane of rock extending upward from the Annapurna range of the Nepali Himalayas, Machapuchare has never been climbed. While it is not the height of Everest, standing only over 22,000 feet, it rises out of relatively low land, giving it a striking profile. This, perhaps, is the reason why it held sacred by peoples living around it, both by highland Tibetan groups and by Nepali people, who claim it to be the dwelling place of the god Shiva. For these reasons, the Nepali government is extremely reluctant to grant climbing permits for the slopes.
Trivia[]
- Machapuchare's wonder quote comes from the Linga Purana, one of the eighteen Mahapuranas , major religious texts in Hinduism.
