Civilopedia entry[]
High above the Andes, surrounded by cascading terraces, rests a city of stone: Machu Pikchu, “the old mountain.” Built as a royal retreat in 1450 by the Sapa Inca Pachacuti, the structure held nearly a thousand workers and attendants from across the empire. Given the Sapa Inca’s role as the embodiment of the divine sun, the complex contains political accommodations as well as temples and ritual sites.
The year 1450 was not an auspicious time to build the foundations of a new empire in the Andes. Even before the Spanish arrived in the region, European-born epidemics had begun spreading through the area to devastating effect. Machu Pikchu was abandoned less than a century after it was constructed, creating a “lost city,” a testament to what could have been.
Trivia[]
- Machu Pikchu's wonder quote is part of a prayer to Viracocha, the Incan creator deity, found in the book Relación de las fábulas y ritos de los Incas ("An account of the fables and rites of the Incas") by Spanish clergyman and chronicler Cristóbal de Molina.
