Civilopedia entry[]
In the early years of Islam, education occurred in the mosque. Lessons focused on spiritual teachings and practical skills, such as medicine and war. The rise of the Abbasids saw a boom in intellectual curiosity that inspired new directions for education. Institutions and study groups sprang up to investigate topics such as theology, history, philosophy, law, music, and literature. The needs of these new lessons quickly outstripped the mosque’s offerings, and by the 10th century, the madrasa had risen in prominence as a college for adults to further their education.
Madrasas varied in design and architecture but typically featured an ornate entry portal and a central courtyard surrounded by open chambers. Curriculums were arranged by a madrasa’s founder and covered both religious and secular topics. Madrasas soon spread across the Abbasid Empire in an effort to unite the learned population under one cultural identity through shared education.
