Civilopedia entry[]
The Mamluk's rise to power is an epic tale. The word means “one who is owned.” In its historical context, it referred to Turkic (also Armenian, Sudanese, or others) slave-soldiers utilized by various Arab caliphates, beginning with the Abbasids. These men were often taken as children and raised as soldiers. Since these warriors lacked kin, or other social networks, that Arab soldiers often had, they could be deployed against other caliphates with impunity.
With military prowess and success came power and respect – even for someone enslaved. Despite their status as property, Mamluk standing rose above even the general freed population. They seized power in Egypt and Syria in 1250 CE, creating the Mamluk Sultanate that persisted for nearly three hundred years, and they decisively expelled the last Crusaders from the Holy Land.
