Civilopedia entry[]
The term “man-at-arms” generally refers to a heavily armored cavalry unit. Here, we differentiate the lightly-armored Iron Age swordsmen from the later heavily-armored medieval infantry. Their armor could be customized (when the private property of the soldier) or mass-produced and provided by the army (i.e. munition armor). Either way it presented a formidable barrier to the enemy. With this in mind, the basic sword or spear adopted various flourishes: hooks to pull encumbered opponents to the ground, beaked hammers to pry open the armor, and hardened blades to pierce metal as well as flesh.
