Civilopedia entry[]
The question “what is mana” could be better posed as “what is not mana?” The concept is often appropriated by games to suggest magical energy, but it comes from Polynesian cultures and is not entirely translatable without understanding an entire worldview. Mana is the power that gives the world life and strength, that which makes sacred things sacred and strong things strong – its Hawaiian use is more of a verb than a noun. Mana is an action of kings and priests (kahuna) and places. It incorporates supernatural power as well as physical strength all at once, and is maintained by observing rites and ritual prohibitions (kapu, a form of taboo).
