Civilopedia entry[]
Mandarins were scholars and bureaucrats who achieved their positions through written examination. They emerged from a long tradition of merit-based appointments, as opposed to inherited rank. During the Ming dynasty, several revisions were made to the exam, incorporating law and current policy in addition to the traditional topics of classical literature and writing. As representatives of Confucian values, many mandarins pursued government positions, while others contributed to society in other ways, such as teaching, practicing law, collecting taxes, and acting as local leaders.
