Environmental anthropologists refer to species who have symbiotically adapted to a now-extinct ecosystem as ‘ghosts.’ So it is with wild mangoes – their heavy seeds are adapted to be eaten and passed on by large animals: rhinoceroses, elephants, hornbills, and the like, most of which are now vanished from much of the areas of South and Southeast Asia from where mango trees originate. But since ancient times, people, too, have been a key way that mangoes spread. In these regions, mangoes form a part of local diets: unripened mango chips dipped in spicy paste, chopped into rojak, or mashed with garlic and chili; or the ripened sweet orange fruit eaten with sweetened sticky rice, refined down into chunda, or eaten on its own.
