Civilopedia entry[]

On July 16, 1945, a miniature sun appeared in the New Mexico desert. Forced together with common explosives, plutonium atoms showered each other with neutrons, splitting their nuclei and prompting a chain reaction that released incredible amounts of energy. In other words: a nuclear explosion. Oppenheimer famously captured the tone surrounding the test by quoting the Bhagavad Gita: “I am become death, destroyer of worlds.” However, the theoretical physicist also quoted John Donne when summarizing his feelings on the bomb: “So death doth touch the Resurrection.” Within a short period, these bombs were used against civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading to the surrender of Imperial Japan in 1945.

The Manhattan Project was a series of experiments on radioactive materials carried out by the United States, with support from the United Kingdom and Canada. It prompted similar projects elsewhere in the world, and the rapid escalation of nuclear weapons and the low-grade fear of worldwide annihilation defined much of the 20th century – before we realized our economy, not just warfare, was sowing the seeds of our destruction.
