Civilopedia entry[]
The lesser of the Chola trading traditions, manigramam was a term used to apply to itinerant Indian merchants in the empire, originating in the present-day state of Kerala. Much has been made of the Cholas’ overseas trade routes – lines stretching via vassals in Srivijaya (Sumatra), Kalinga, Bengal, Burma, present-day Thailand, Cambodia, and southern Vietnam (and possibly as far as Australia and Hawai’i, based on DNA evidence of plant goods). But Chola trading power also extended internally over areas of direct control, including Sri Lanka, Kerala, and all of the southern tip of India.
The diversity of traded goods influenced religion, culture, politics, and food across the region. The chili peppers that give so much South and Southeast Asian cuisines their heat remained undiscovered in Asia, growing as they were in Mesoamerica, but saffron, cumin, and other spices moved readily through manigramam holds – as did war elephants, jewels, and weapons.
