When ancient sea beds were buried under layers and layers of silt and sand, the pressure of all that rock transformed mounds of shells into limestone. If that limestone is pushed deeper underground, approaching the hot mantle of the earth, the process is even more intense and the rock is transformed yet again. Marble, like limestone, is soft and good for carving, but unlike limestone it is hard enough to resist chipping and crumbling. When marble is thin, it has an almost translucent quality, making it capable of stunning, lifelike sculptures. Marble has been used in antiquity and today for its beauty, in the creation of stunning works of art and architecture. Michelangelo saw an "angel" in the marble (and carved until he set him free), and Shah Jahan saw fit to place his beloved in a marble tomb: the Taj Mahal.
