Put simply, marines are land combat units deployed at sea for use in amphibious invasions (or to seize other ships). Until large cannons were deployed on ships, most naval combat was performed by the ancient equivalent of marines – navy ships from Rome to Majapahit to the Chola would close in on their enemy, and soldiers would attempt to board and capture the other vessel. In this sense, ships are merely a means of transport; later innovations in naval technology were needed for ship-to-ship combat (Greek fire and other such weapons were outliers).
However, marines are not simply ship-to-ship fighters. They became vital as an advance force for major wars, especially those overseas where forces could establish a foothold on an enemy coast and pave the way for a larger army invasion. In World War II, the United States Marine Corps was crucial in securing sites in battles such as Normandy and Iwo Jima. These kinds of invasions were especially crucial when air power entered the picture – a rapid, amphibious force can seize an airfield, which in turn offers support for a greater advance.
