Civilopedia entry[]

The mastaba was a common type of tomb constructed by the ancient Egyptians throughout their long history. These structures were rectangular, with sides that sloped up to a flat roof. Inside the mastaba was a chapel where priests and family members could leave offerings for the deceased. The chapel had a false door, an artistic rendition of an entrance via which the dead were thought to cross the barrier between life and death.

Beneath the mastaba was the tomb itself. The shaft leading down to the burial chamber was filled with rubble to stymie grave robbers, and a second underground chamber sometimes stored additional goods for the deceased to take into the afterlife. Mastabas were constructed by individuals during the Old and Middle Kingdoms until they were phased out in favor of alternative burial methods. These “eternal houses” continue to live up to their name, forming an iconic part of Egyptian necropolises today.
