Civilopedia entry[]
As the Arab caliphates expanded, they incorporated a wide body of non-Arabs into their collective, most notably Persian. Persian language and culture had a profound impact on many Muslim societies, especially from Mesopotamia eastward. This raises a fundamental question: to what extent are cultures, languages, and other markers of identity separable from religion? The oldest global religions – Judaism, Shinto, and Hinduism – do not focus on conversion. In contrast, the conversion of foreign groups is a key goal of the world’s newer religions of Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam.
In the Arab caliphates, the category of “mawla” became a way to incorporate non-Arabs into an Arab-dominated structure. In the Abbasid Caliphate, this especially meant Persians, including the leading general of the Abbasid Revolution, Abu Muslim Abd al-Rahman ibn Muslim al-Khurasani. This tolerance gave the Abbasids a key advantage over their rivals when it came to bringing large numbers of potential allies, subjects, and converts into the fold.
