Civilopedia entry[]

Medieval bridges developed out of their ancient counterparts, combining practicality and aesthetics to expand and enhance building methods. East Asia saw the rise of wooden cantilever bridges, some of which were covered and featured elegant designs and decorations. These bridges supported increased travel and trade. Similarly, the Inca developed a system for maintaining rope bridges, in which villages along the extensive road system replaced their cables nearly every year as a community in order to prevent disruptions in mountain travel and communication. In the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa, the spread of the pointed arch, or ogival, replaced the round Roman arch technique, providing longer-term stability to the heavy stone structures. Bridges could be fortified as defensive positions and the drawbridge could be raised to prevent enemies from entering a castle or settlement.
