Civilopedia entry[]
Medja is a region in Nubia, present-day Sudan, that was always on the frontiers of Egypt. The Egyptians knew its people as Medjay – renowned for their archery skills. Given that the Medjay were just outside Egypt's central control, they could be either a boon or a bane to the pharaohs. These nomadic people from the lands bordering the Red Sea likely spoke a language related to Somali or Oromo. During later years, around 1500 BCE, the Egyptian state began incorporating Medjay units into the empire, as did the Kushites to the south. Over time, the meaning of the term “Medjay” drifted from defining the region and came to represent a particular corps of troops, especially those involved in policing – even if those members were ethnically, culturally, and regionally Egyptian. By the 500s BCE, the Medjay largely disappeared from historical records.
