Civilopedia entry[]

Royal courts often contained elaborate displays of treasures from around the world: works of art, curiosities, and even entire gardens landscaped to look like foreign, or conquered, lands. Many courts also contained menageries, collections of animals sent as gifts or tributes from abroad. Charlemagne had a collection of exotic animals, including monkeys, camels, and an elephant; the Tower of London held lions and bears in cages. The real height of the menagerie was the period of absolute monarchy when the majesty of the court became a central means of building a dynasty. Notably, most menageries were not zoological parks; these were not available to the public but were designed for the ruler’s pleasure and to spread their fame. The idea that the public should be educated developed slowly during the early modern period, along with public education and hospitals.
