Civilopedia entry[]
The center of the Hindu-Buddhist heavens is the summit of Mount Meru, the home of the gods. But Hindu temples in Bali are versions of the heavens in miniature, featuring soaring, tiered pinnacles also termed meru, after the mountain. As with its divine counterpart, each meru contains sacred objects that ensure the gods’ presence on the site (including the Nine Gems, discussed as a Siamese civic).
The meru structure indicates the relationship of Majapahit society to the idea of the divine. Javanese royalty traced its lineage back to the god Vishnu; having shrines ensured that some of this divine power remained at the ruler’s disposal. Indeed, the possession of secret stores of magical power was key to Indonesian kingship, and could be sourced from a divine ancestry, a supernatural guardian, or a magical kris (knife).
