How do you use Metal Casting? |
Civilopedia entry[]
The process of casting metal isn’t new to the early modern period; it took off in the later part of the second millennium BCE. The process involves pouring molten metal into molds to form complex shapes that are difficult to achieve via the old process of hammering, heating, and bending. While forged metal is generally stronger than cast metal, casting is easy to mass produce, which has become increasingly important as populations expand.
Shang, Zhou, and Qin Dynasties – the earliest Chinese dynasties – cast metal, and the Colossus of Rhodes was even cast of bronze. The boom in cathedral construction in medieval Europe relied heavily upon cast metal pieces, leading to an increase in experimentation. In 1313, this took a dark turn with the casting of the first iron cannon (by, ironically, a monk).
