The Middle East is a region of Earth that encompasses northeastern Africa, Mesopotamia, and western Asia, including countries such as present-day Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Iran, and Turkey. Historically, it was also home to the Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites, and Sumerians.
The Middle East is sometimes treated as a subregion of Asia.
