Civilopedia entry[]
What is the proper role of the military in society? Should the army take a back seat as the servant of a democratic process, or is the military an active participant in politics? In militaristic societies, the choice is clearly the latter – leaders often come from the ranks of generals, and the military acts as the custodian of national values and norms. Terms such as “junta” are often used to describe militaristic societies. As dissent and debate are curbed, democracy often wanes under authoritarian regimes. We can see Napoleonic Europe as one example of this – gone were the old aristocracy, with their models of care for and stewardship over the population; instead, a military moved in, ostensibly standing outside issues of social class as it organized society to fit its own model.
