Civilopedia entry[]
Religions are complex systems, combining beliefs, ethics, and morals, as well as identities, politics, and economics. They are codes for how to exist in the world as a part of something larger, they often shape rules for engaging with others, and they open us up to the barriers of our existence and knowledge. Some religions – especially, but not limited to, Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam – see their message as universal, and seek to spread their beliefs to all who will hear them. Missionaries are those who appoint themselves, or are appointed, to spread this message.
Missionaries, and the rulers who send missionaries in large numbers, are heroic figures in many of these religions’ founding stories. For instance, Saint Paul, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Ashoka the Great each shaped the spread and influence of their religions across the world (Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, respectively). In so doing, these world religions reshaped pre-existing notions of identity and belonging and set the stage for larger, universal empires.
