Civilopedia entry[]
Mit’a literally means “season,” and was the regular corvée labor system in the Inca Empire. It was a complicated system but was vital to the massive infrastructure, expansion, and military conquests of the Inca. Mit’a service could consume the vast majority of the year, up to 300 days. All the time that wasn't used for farming was expected to be used in service of the state. Labor units were arranged by ethnic group or profession: craftsmen were not required to serve in war or as farmers, and particular conquered people were often assigned to roles in which they had a perceived skill. In this way, the great Andean roads and bridges were built and maintained, armies were levied, and imperial granaries and treasuries were filled.
The Inca, of course, were exempt.
