Civilopedia entry[]

Bridges in the modern period moved beyond the age of wood and stone to embrace metal and concrete. Many techniques that had been reliable across the centuries were adapted for these new materials; for instance, arches are still common in many styles around the world. Cantilever bridges have also adapted to make use of truss systems, in which a series of beams and nodes are arranged into a firm structure of triangles. As the Industrial Revolution took off, additional methods were employed to maximize the use of wrought iron and eventually steel, which has a higher tensile strength and is capable of supporting larger structures. Today, cable-stayed and suspension bridges are some of the world’s longest and best-known overpasses, notable for their engineering feats and their attractive appearance.
